Donating an older computer to charity?

You need to know that you delete files, they aren't actually deleted. Even if you empty the Windows Trash Bin the files are still sitting there.

When you delete a file, the mapping the computer uses to find the file is removed, but the file itself stays intact. Anyone with a bit of savvy and/or the right software can easily recover those deleted files. The same thing applies to deleting a drive or partition; all the files on the disk remain intact. If you want to be sure none of your personal information goes with the hard drive, have us wipe the drive first. A wipe writes over every sector with ones or zeros. Overwriting every sector on the drive will prevent anyone from retrieving any data that was once stored on this drive.
